2023 GLCGA First Team

Sunday June 18th Cardigan Bay Golf Club

Carms & Pembs 1 v Glamorgan 1

Congratulations to the Glamorganshire first team who won 7.5 – 1.5.

Great camaraderie amongst the team as we arrived and played a practice round at Cardigan Golf Club.  We were delighted to have our ambassador Trish Johnson join us for this match. After eating dinner at the golf club and discussing the order for the following day, the team were in great spirits.

On the day of the match, the team arrived at the club early in eagerness to practice for the match ahead.  Breakfast was offered at the club and then our matches started.  A tremendous effort in all three foursomes and some great golf meant we were 3-0 up at lunchtime.

Some mentoring from Trish to some of our players and a deliberation on team order produced some great results in the afternoon matches.  Glamorgan put on superb display of golf ultimately winning overall 7.5 points against 1.5 points.

Congratulations Glamorgan Ladies’ 1st Team and thank you to Cardigan Golf Club, our President, Immediate past captain and husbands for their continued support.

The value of the practice round and staying the night before again paid dividends as was shown by the performance and high spirits of the team.

First Team members:
Fauve Birch
Emma Greenslade
Deborah Howard
Frances Leonard
Cerys Mitchell
Julie Thomas
Elin Tynan
Cheryl Western

Well done to all players.

Sunday June 11th Langland Bay GC – Glamorgan 1 v Monmouthshire 1

For this match many of the team, all the team played in the Langland Bay open day the Tuesday prior. It was local for many players and therefore the necessity to stay felt not necessary.

This was first match of the year and which brought about some new foursomes’ pairings and players to the team.  The first 2 matches were very close with the first match gaining a point on the last hole and second match unfortunately losing a point on the last hole.  The last match won comfortably leaving Glamorgan 2-1 up at lunchtime.

After a quick lunch due to the timings of the singles matches in the afternoon, Glamorgan put up a great fight against Monmouthshire but unfortunately the experience and depth of Monmouthshire sadly led us to 5-4 defeat.

This was a tough match for Glamorgan and a disappointing result.  However, all players gave their best and it was also Rebecca Del Gonzalez first appearance for Glamorgan on her 13th Birthday and she played and conducted herself superbly on the golf course.

Congratulations to Emma Greenslade and Frances Leonard who were awarded their Glamorgan Colours.

Thank you to Langland Bay Golf Club, our President, Immediate past captain, Senior Captain and committee for your continued support.

2022

Inter -County Champions 2022!

Glamorgan 1st team played in the Welsh Inter Counties Championship final at Llanishen Golf Club on Sunday 18th September 2022.

The team consisted of:

Emma Greenslade                Glamorganshire GC

Deborah Howard                   Langland Bay GC

Cerys Jenkins                        Pyle & Kenfig GC

Amy Rees                               Southerndown GC

Julie Thomas                         Pontardawe GC

Elin Tynan                             Pyle & Kenfig GC

Cheryl Western                     Pyle & Kenfig GC

The match was played against Mid Wales who had been victorious from the North Wales counties.

It was also played under the stewardship of Wales Golf the year which made the event a more prestigious occasion. Llanishen GC proved excellent hosts, and the golf course was extremely challenging for all.

Three Foursomes matches teed off from 8.30am.

Match 1 saw Elin Tynan, our County Champion, paired with our next youngest player, Emma Greenslade against Angharad Bassett and Sally Wilkinson.

Match 2  saw Julie Thomas and Deb Howard versus Sherrie Edwards and Ellen Jones; and

Match 3 saw Cerys Jenkins and Amy Rees playing Isobel Kelly and Mary Epsom.

All matches were tight with little leeway in any game.

Julie and Deb pulled away first of all and ended up winners by 4&3.

However it was nip and tuck in the other two.

Finally, Cerys and Amy fell at the 17th to a very strong pairing Isobel and Vice Capt Mary.

It went to the last hole in the 1st match and with great relief our Glamorgan pair came out on top by 2 holes.

Afternoon Singles

1)            Amy Rees                             v              Angharad Bassett

2)            Elin Tynan                             v              Sara Rees Evans

3)            Deborah Howard                   v              Sherrie Edwards

4)            Emma Greenslade                v              Ellen Jones

5)            Cerys Jenkins                       v              Harriet Evans

6)            Julie Thomas                         v              Isobel Kelly

We were happy to edge the foursomes matches by 2-1, but very much aware that we needed 3 out of 6 singles matches to go our way in order to be triumphant.

Glamorgan tactics were to go with experience at the front and back, and our County Champion Elin was content to go out in 2nd spot.

Nearly all the single matches were close, however, our vice Capt Julie was unknowingly given the short straw by being paired against Isobel Kelly, a very strong young player with a +1 handicap. Julie despite a great fight succumbed to her stronger opponent.

The other matches were all ebbing and flowing, one up here, one down there, however, once we turned to the back nine, we did have three matches where Glamorgan were keeping their noses in front.

And so, it turned out, an experienced Amy Rees who I had burdened with leading the team out won her match 2&1 with a strong performance.

Following her to success was Deb Howard who also won 2&1.

Meanwhile, Elin was going down 18 with the Mid Wales Captain Sara needing to win the 18th for a half, and Emma Greenslade was coming along hole 17 one up on her opponent Ellen Jones.

All turned out well, Emma holed a putt to win the 17th hole and it turned out to be the winning putt for Glamorgan.

Unfortunately Cerys was defeated on 16, and Elin on 18 so the match couldn’t have been closer. We were the victors by 5 matches to 4.

I would like to thank the players for giving their all this season and on that day. They played their hearts out for the County, and were rewarded with being All Wales County Champions – the first time for Glamorgan since 2008.

 1st team Glamorgan v C&P 23rd June 2022

The weather was set with a fine morning, but cloudier in the afternoon with a possibility of rain.

The Glamorgan team was:

Fauve Birch Pyle & Kenfig GC

Emma Greenslade Glamorganshire GC

Deborah Howard Langland Bay GC

Francis Leonard Pennard GC

Alice Thomas Radyr GC

Elin Tynan Pyle & Kenfig GC

Cheryl Western Pyle & Kenfig GC

Three foursomes matches were keenly fought during the morning sunshine.

Glamorgan’s top pair, Fauve Birch and County Champion Elin Tynan took on Caris Worby and Ffion Evans. A very low scoring match saw Glamorgan the victors by 3&1.

The other foursomes matches unfortunately went the way of C&P but narrowly, 2&1 and 1 up.

So the afternoon singles were vitally important now, we had to win 4 out of the 6 matches …….. and we did!

Glamorgan lost the first two matches and won the last three.

This made the match tied at 4-4.

The result depended on the third match – Cheryl Western of Pyle and Kenfig v Ffion Evans of Newport Links. Cheryl was 2 up throughout most of the match but lost the 17th, setting up a tense and thrilling finale.

Luckily for us, Ffion put her 2nd shot to the 18th out of bounds and played another shot just over the green.

Cheryl’s tee shot set up a blind and awkward 2nd which went behind a small tree. However with Ffion’s misfortune, Cheryl could play short and on the green with her 4th shot, as a half was all she needed to win the game.

We had won our 2nd match with the last putt on the last green, just the same as against Monmouthshire.

I could not be prouder of the Glamorgan girls who gelled well and played their hearts out for the County.

We are now through to the All Wales Finals on Sunday 18th September at Llanishen GC.

I would hope we can count on a lot of home support as the finals are in our Home county.

Glamorgan 1st v Monmouthshire 1st  28 May 2022

Celtic Manor (Roman Road)

Sunny conditions and a weather forecast of a good day ahead promoted hard fought matches in the morning foursomes.  Ironically, they all finished on the 16th green, two in favour of Glamorgan and one for Monmouthshire.

Lunch was a feast of various sandwiches, wraps and chips eagerly enjoyed by all.

The afternoon singles was nip and tuck on the front nine, and as matches progressed all was not clear until the 16th and 17th holes.
Deb Howard put up a strong fight playing Lauren Hillier (ex professional player).
Amy Rees enjoyed a see-sawing game against Jess Evans, but some strong putting saw Amy be successful on the 16th.
Cerys Jenkins put in an equally strong performance against Monmouthshire’s IPC Patricia Fernon.
Emma Greenslade also worked hard in her first senior County match but unfortunately narrowly lost to an exceptional young player in Sofia
Benitez.
Cheryl Western was paired against an experienced young Celtic Manor member Sophie Madsen, and was staging a strong comeback before
running out of holes on the 17th.
Julie Thomas was a couple down against Danielle Cobley before battling to be 1 up after 16 holes. This was followed by a spectacular chip in
for two at the 17th by Danielle. An exciting finale was now in store on the 18th, unluckily for Monmouthshire a 3 off the tee effectively gave
the match to Glamorgan as Julie scored a creditable par 5 to win the game.

Thanks go to Michelle Gallagher, Monmouthshire’s Captain for her hospitality and friendship; to the team who were gracious in defeat and
the Celtic Manor for their evening meal and service which was first class.
Very indebted for the performance and attitude of the Glamorgan team who were extremely impressive and won on an away course.
This was extremely important to stay in the hunt for a place in the County Finals at the end of the season.

2019

Inter-County Championships Final

15th September 2019 @ Royal Porthcawl Golf Club

Glamorgan played Caernarfonshire & Anglesey in the All Wales Inter-County finals at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club.  The Glamorgan team selected for the championship was;

Charlotte Bethell – Radyr GC
Fauve Birch – Pennard GC
Rachel Jennings – Pennard GC
Amy Rees – Southerndown GC
Denise Richards – Creigiau GC
Alice Thomas – Radyr GC
Julie Thomas – Pontardawe GC
Claire Thompson – Pyle & Kenfig GC

The teams played in excellent weather conditions in the morning foursomes with a blustery wind picking up off Rest Bay for the afternoon singles. The links course was set up well and provided a fair challenge to both teams.

Morning Foursomes results

The score could have gone either way with the 2nd and 3rd matches being closely contended

Fauve Birch and Rachel Jennings won their match comfortably 6&5 v Grainne Pendlebury and Nicola Phillips

Senior Welsh Internationals Julie Thomas and Denise Richards narrowly lost their match 1 down v Jeanette Williams and Jane Hallows

County Champion Charlotte Bethell and Alice Thomas lost 2&1 v Ann Lewis and Pip Settle

By the Mid championship point Glamorgan found themselves 2:1 down

So with 6 points available from the afternoon singles there was all to play for. We needed 4 points  to secure the championship, however after 6 very closely fought singles matches we were able to secure 3 points from 3 wins,  just narrowly missing out on winning the championships.

The final result was Glamorgan 4 points Caernarfonshire & Anglesey 5

Singles results

Charlotte Bethell lost to Ann Lewis 4&3
Rachel Jennings beat Jane Hallows 9&7
Julie Thomas lost on the 18th green to Grainne Pendlebury 2up
Amy Rees also lost on the 18th to Pip Settle 1up
Alice Thomas fought back from 4 down to beat Nicola Phillips 2&1
Fauve Birch finished strongly beating Jeanette Williams 5&4

The match was played in great spirit with an excellent camaraderie between both teams. Many congratulations to Glamorgan ladies who are the All Wales runners-up and to C&A who are the All Wales Inter-County Champions 2019

We greatly appreciate the many supporters who came to cheer the team on. And a big thank you to Royal Porthcawl for courtesy of the course and for looking after us on that day.

The team battled around the course in beating rain and wind and were victorious, winning the singles matches 5:1.

2018 News

15 & 16 Sept 2018  County Finals Weekend at Builth Wells

Wonderful two days at a very gracious host club Builth Wells.

Glamorgan were playing Denbighshire & Flintshire in a fight for 3rd and 4th place.
Monmouthshire were drawn with Caernarvonshire & Anglesey for 1st and 2nd.

Morning Foursomes:

Denise Richards & Fauve Birch v Lea Ann Bramwell & Dawn Jones

Ruth O’Carroll and Alaitz Zubikarai v Suzanne Cheatle & Beth Davies

Alice Thomas and Ashlie Hobbs v Brenda Roberts & Janet Turner

The first match was lost by Glamorgan who had a frustrating morning.
Ruth and Alaitz were 4 down in the 2nd match with nothing going to plan, when just into the back 9 things suddenly clicked and a remarkable fight back was underway. Glamorgan suddenly began chipping and putting like demons and put pressure on the game of the D&F girls.
We ended up winning this match on the last green against all the odds – maybe a “Miracle at Medina” moment was upon us?
Meanwhile the 2 youngsters playing very mature golf were grinding down their opponents. I was proud of their victory by 3&2.
Glamorgan had the edge by 2 matches to 1.

Singles

Fauve Birch v Dawn Jones

Ruth O’Carroll v Beth Davies

Ashlie Hobbs v Suzanne Cheatle

Claire Thompson v Brenda Roberts

Alice Thomas v Janet Turner

Alaitz Zubikarai v Lea Ann Bramwell

It was agreed by the Captains that once a winning score had been reached by one team in the afternoon – then the other matches would be called in and a half agreed.

There were some tremendous performances in the afternoon.
Fauve was in a non-messing about mood and demolished her unfortunate opponent by 8&7.
Claire, playing in her very first 1st team match was out to prove point and won by a tremendous 9&7.
Equally convincing, young Alice Thomas won her match by 7&6.

This meant that Glamorgan had 5 points and could not be beaten. We called the other matches in but I did feel for Ashlie who was 4 up after 13 holes and was visibly disappointed not to be able to finish her opponent off!

After not reaching the County Finals last year, I was thrilled for our players to go this year and very proud that they were 3rd place winners.

That concludes my captaincy on a fairly successful note – I cannot praise all the players enough for their commitment and friendship during these 2 years. I will always remember every one of them, and hope they remain attached to the County in some way.
I also thank Julia, Evelyn and everyone who has given me their advice and thoughts regarding team selection, their support at matches and hope I have given the County teams that have played to their potential.
Thanks to everyone on Committee for their hard work and their time given to the cause.

Lesley Jones  – County Captain 2017 & 2018

Previous match reports

15 August 2018  v Monmouthshire at Creigiau

Weather was damp to begin with but improved through the day with warm sun and pleasant breeze during the afternoon.

The golf overall was of an exceptional standard with an abundance of birdies from chip-in’s and long putts being holed.

MORNING FOURSOMES

GLAMORGAN                                                MONMOUTHSHIRE

Denise Richards & Charlotte Bethell  v    Sophie Madsen & Jordan Ryan       2 UP

Although Glamorgan lost the three foursomes matches – with two going to the 18th, it was relatively close overall.

SINGLES – pm

Denise Richards v Chris Harries     5&3

Ruth O’Carroll v Lauren Hillier        4&3

Fauve Birch v Sophie Madsen        2&1

Glamorgan were unfortunately beaten by a birdie-fest from Monmouthshire in the afternoon.
The golf was truly exceptional and some of the best I have ever seen in a local derby match.
A special mention has to go to Ashlie Hobbs from Rhondda Golf Club making her debut for the County 1st team – she played mature golf with Ruth in the morning foursomes and in her afternoon singles – well done Ashlie!
I must congratulate Denise Richards for our only success during the day – an old-hand who seemingly always manages to grind out a result – inspiring performance!

Although losing this match, Glamorgan will travel to Welsh County Finals at Builth Wells in September where they will compete for 3rd or 4th place. We are grateful for that, and will try our utmost for a win.

Thank you to all the players for giving their best.
Grateful to all officials and supporters who gave their support and encouragement.
