2025 Winter Training for Junior Girls

The GLCGA girls’ training sessions are underway. Very well done to those early birds who turned out at Llantrisant Golf Club and Pontyclun Golf Club for their 8:30am putting lesson. The other four groups met at Hensol Golf Academy, between 10.15am to 2.30pm, for their one-hour coaching. Practice drills and questioning were suited to their playing level. Improvement is already evident – awesome work girls, and many thanks to coaches John Macdonald and Deborah McCooke.

Sunday March 6th saw 26 of our Glamorgan girls keen to head to The Vale Resort.

It was a cold crisp morning for their fourth winter coaching session. Pre-shot routine on the driving range with Georgia Lewis PGA. Keith Williams PGA was, at last, able to use the outside practise areas with a focus on bunker techniques and some chipping practise over various distances.

Through the GLCGA Junior Coaching Programme we aim to:

Encourage girls to play more golf. Encourage friendships to develop confidence in entering competitions together or as a group.
Raise awareness and understanding of additional aspects of playing golf by giving guidance in: etiquette, golf terminology, marking a card, rules, various playing formats, handicaps.
Advise of suitable events for girls such as taster sessions, social golf events, fun golf days, coaching clinics, friendly matches, Inter-county Championships.
Promote exit routes to extend playing opportunities. e,g,. SWGGA events, Ping Junior Tour Qualifiers.

New Junior Coaching Measures during COVID-19 Restrictions

The County agree to adhere to the Welsh Government, Wales Golf and Industry Guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Following a Risk Assessment exercise, we have implemented a set of measures to comply with the above guidelines. Click here to access these set of measures, together with a self declaration form.

COVID-19

Given the recent escalating situation regarding Coronovirus we confirm the cancelation of our next girls’ coaching session at The Vale Resort. This, as you know, was planned for Sunday 5th April.

This announcement will not come as a surprise and it comes with regret but an obvious necessity. We trust you are all keeping well and looking after yourselves in these troubling times. As a County, we will continue to monitor and take advice from Wales Golf and Government policy as time progresses. Individual golf clubs are setting their own conditions/decisions for play.

Rest assured, we aim to bring our young County golfers together again at the earliest opportunity but our immediate priority for everyone is to keep themselves and others safe.

There has been a super turnout for each of our three, coaching sessions for girls.

Well done girls!

The next one is on Sunday 5th April 9.30am – 11.00am or 11.00am – 12.30pm

The girls have been given the opportunity to learn and develop technically in all aspects of the game. Even though the weather hasn’t always been in our favour, using the undercover driving range at The Vale Resort has provided continuity to the County coaching programme.

You’ll find some great opportunities and offers for juniors in local golf clubs.

Ask around for details of junior lessons and junior membership.

There are club, county, regional and Welsh coaching schemes for keen and promising players.

All our winter dates are on Sunday mornings:

1st Session 9.30am – 11.00am is for girls up to age 13 and those who may or may not yet have a higher handicap

2nd Session 11.00-12.30 is for girls aged 13 who have attained a lower handicap

These age and ability stated above are initial guidelines only and may vary slightly depending upon those attending the sessions.

Have you attended individual or group golf lessons and are acquiring the basics of a golf swing
Do you have a desire to take up golf and improve your game as well as have fun with like-minded girls

Answered YES to some of these questions? Then you are eligible for:

a group coaching programme through the winter
social golf – 9 holes of golf at courses in Glamorgan and enjoy a meal together after your round
friendly matches against neighbouring Counties
selection to represent Glamorgan in annual the Welsh Under 16 Inter County Championship
Notification of Wales Golf Clinics, High Performance sessions, Open Competitions, etc., as they are made available

As well as range practice we were able to enjoy some chilly but reasonable weather

to practice putting, chipping and bunker play on the outside facilities at The Vale.
